The Impact

All proceeds from this event will go to help those in need in Allen County through The Salvation Army Corps Community Center programs and the Adult Rehabilitation Center program.

The Salvation Army Corps Community Center served 20,993 through the following programs.

  • Social Services provide emergency financial assistance for rent/mortgage payments, utility bills, food, clothing, transportation and other emergency needs. The Salvation Army Social Service programs provide hope for low income families and individuals who may other wise fall through the cracks. We combine financial assistance for basic needs with encouragement and referrals to other local resources. The Salvation Army served 8,721 (unduplicated) Allen County residents in 2008.
  • Youth Programs are comprised of after-school activities, character building programs and a summer day camp program that challenges youth to develop physically, mentally, socially and spiritually. These programs provide youth with a safe and nurturing environment. Our homework assistance program provides the assistance youth need to overcome language barriers and build skills they need to succeed in the classroom. Basketball tournaments provide youth with a safe place where their differences are respected and they can build physical skills. The activities we provide not only allow youth to build skills in specific areas, but they build self esteem, teamwork, appreciation for ethnic differences and much more.
  • Tools for School program provides new school supplies for students whose families need assistance. The Salvation Army provided 1,076 youth with their required school supplies in 2008.
  • Christmas programs provide families with food, as well as clothing and toys for their children. In 2008, The Salvation Army helped 1,653 families, including 4,421 children, with a very Merry Christmas through our various activities (Angel Tree, Adopt a Family, Stuff a Stocking, etc.)
  • Community Care volunteers visit and provide gifts to patients in nursing homes, hospitals, and shut-ins. The Salvation Army staff and volunteers visited 3,939 individuals in 2008 through this program.
  • Emergency Disaster Services provide emergency assistance for victims of natural disasters such as, floods, tornadoes, fires or other unforeseen incidents.
  • The Salvation Army's Adult Rehabilitation Centers provide spiritual, social and emotional assistance for men and women who have lost the ability to cope with their problems and provide for themselves. Each center offers residential housing and work, group and individual therapy within clean, wholesome surroundings. The physical and spiritual care that program participants receive here prepares them to re-enter society and return to gainful employment. Many of those rehabilitated go on to be reunited with their families and resume a normal life. The work therapy portion of the program includes the collection, repair and sale of donated items (see list of accepted items) through The Salvation Army Family Stores (formerly known as Thrift Stores). This experience helps participants learn or relearn how to be productive, participate cooperatively, follow instructions, contribute toward a goal and maintain balance.
